A young Catholic’s insights on a deeper, more virtuous life.

“The only people who are never bored are lovers.”

“They said you can rap about anything except for Jesus
That means guns, sex, lies, video tapes
But if I talk about God my record won’t get played. Huh?” -Kanye, Jesus Walks

Dear Friend,

I know this adds to the list of Kanye things on your feed, but it’s a hot topic for a reason. Music is art. Art is always up for interpretation, and this is not my interpretation of Kanye’s art, it is a deep appreciation for his indecipherable conversion to Christ which should look crazy to the non-believer and beautiful to the believer. Say what you want about the movement of Kanye’s influence, music, or life, this is about God.

For starters, I love that his album didn’t drop on the day he said it would. It just reminds us that God’s masterpieces aren’t set on some timeline we have, but on His time. They are ready when He says so. I love that the album dropped when we all least expected it and when it did, it was as if the heart of the world skipped a beat. The beauty of blessings dropping when we least expect them IS how God works.

Also, he’s married to a Kardashian.  A Kardashian — a woman whose whole life has convinced men and women that she is beautiful enough to break the internet with her body, AND he told her she needs to dress more modest.

Wait stop. There was a time the world actually fell for the joke that the power to “break the internet” with your cheeks is better than God?

He told a sex icon, of whom he also calls wife, she needs to dress more modest. If anything has the authority to overthrow a husband’s personal infatuation with how his wife dresses, her appeal, and/or (up for debate) lust, it’s God, and only God. God who dwells in the human heart.

Period.

And sure I wanted to make this article heavily focused on the beauty of chastity, since he asked his single writers and produces to abstain from pre-martial sex in the making of Jesus is King, and speaks openly about his healing from pornography, but I realized there’s a lot of good content on that elsewhere. I want the main focus to be on just the glorious power of the Gospel — of Jesus’ legacy in all this redemption — which we don’t acknowledge enough.

Only God’s grace can make a man go from dropping a single with Lil Pump called I love it (read lyrics on your own time) to singing, “Jesus please heal, Jesus please help, Jesus please forgive.”

Only God’s love can make a man go from saying, “Playboy was my gateway into full-on pornography addiction, my dad had a Playboy left out at age 5, and it’s affected almost every choice I made for the rest of my life from age 5 to now, having to kick the habit.” to singing, “when you got daughters, always keep them safe.. raise our sons, train them in the faith.”

Only Gods powerful hand that breathes new life into a soul can take a person’s selfishness (cause we all know Kanye loved himself) and turn it into writing Gospel music about God and hosting Sunday Service’s for God, not himself. That’s the Gospel. The power to take life, reverse it, and fill it with hope, love, and faith.

“Kanye West serves God now!” -Kanye

Every time I look up, I see God’s faithfulness
And it shows just how much He is miraculous
I can’t keep it to myself, I can’t sit here and be still
Everybody, I will tell ’til the whole world is healed
King of Kings, Lord of Lords, all He has in store-God Is, Jesus is King

There are a lot of people laughing, saying Kanye and his new witness is just him getting “lost in translation.”  Watch James Corden ask him the questions all skeptics are asking in his version of “Airpool Karaoke” and Kanye is not even close to looking lost. He is sure that the path he is on is right, and good, and joyful.

Since Kanye suffers with mental illness and has a history of “going off the rail” with his behavior, he has no credibility, right?  Wrong. For so many reasons.

One being how he is a vessel of hope for many people suffering with their own addictions to money, wealth, fame, success, lust, sex, porn, etc.  The doubt we have that God can’t handle our messy lives is common for many people. But Kanye’s life shows God will heal any addiction that enslaves us.

He is also an example to those who struggle with mental illness.  Kanye praising the Lord IS his means of enduring painful experiences with mental illness. When any of us undergo tough moments of emotional pain, we numb ourselves, hit the blunt, swig another beer down, eat, shop, pull up social media, drive, and more. Kanye Praising God is the remedy to heavy emotional turmoil of any kind.

We don’t have to perfect our lives to obtain God’s love. We don’t have to earn God’s love by offering Him anything we own. We don’t have to be perfect for God. We have to open ourselves up to Him with the desire to repent and find our way back home.

Kanye has been advocating people to repent. He’s not telling them to “hurry up and love God!” or just the ways God has been working in his life, no, he’s asking people who listen to him to take life serious enough to repent from all that you do/did that was sinful. “It’s not about ‘being a good person’, it’s about our eternal destination” he sings. Our salvation won for us by Jesus Christ. And to tap into the power of that, at any moment, in any circumstance, is the difference it makes. It’s a celebration.

“This is not a show, this is my eternal soul.” -God is, Kanye

A lot of people will say great, awesome, and worthwhile things about God and how He’s moved in their life, but Kanye is vividly talking about how he is talking with God, not about Him. This makes all the difference.

But most of all, the recent Airpool Karaoke with James Corden showcases the immense beauty of Kanye’s joy. There is a smile on that man’s face that no one could force, no one could pay him to have, nothing that he would even do to begin with — since he was always known as the man who never smiled. Before his conversion, he had everything…except a smile.

Woah.

All the hope to know a bit more that wherever we are at in life, God heals.

All the love we have to know that God is not as judgmental as we are.

All the faith we have to know that God is really what we need at the end of this life.

All the truth to know that someone’s life of money, fame, sex, awards, cars, and so much more left a man unfulfilled until he filled Himself with Jesus.

Personally, I don’t really need to hear cute songs about driving to Church on Sundays in a green tractor, feeling “blessed” or another reference about God that made for a good rhyme scheme. No, I want a song that imbues the sound of God’s glory working through someone who is in total worship of Him. Songs where the singers are so prayerfully relating their lives to the truth that scripture offers. Kanye is on track with how God is healing his life, not his own story about it. We are walking with him now, and we need to keep the prayers up for him.

Kanye’s album radiates proof that the Holy Spirit is alive and here for us, with us, and lives through us.

Powerful stuff. God is simple, but the results of his love are astonishing.

A man who has seen it all; sex, revenge on others, violence, money, awards shows, famous people, big houses, large incomes, one of the biggest brands created, and can stand in front of thousands of people and say, “nothing beats God,” is more credible than this article and has increased my faith a hundred fold.

All I’m saying, someone reading this better tell Kanye about the Eucharist. I mean, that would blow his mind… but baby steps from here. 🙂

On that note…listen to Jesus is King,

Shannon
